Cutting Expansion Joints in Concrete Floors: Technique and Rules

Joint Types We Cut

  1. Shrinkage Joints

    Prevent random crack formation as the slab cures. Cut in a grid of squares or rectangles spaced no more than 6 meters apart.

  2. Expansion (Isolation) Joints

    Compensate for concrete expansion and contraction with temperature swings. Required around columns, walls and the building perimeter.

  3. Construction (Cold) Joints

    Placed wherever pouring was paused overnight or for a process break.

Timing and Cutting Depth

Joints are cut within a narrow window — 6–12 hours after pouring, once the slab can bear the saw's weight but hasn't yet built up critical stress. Being late by even a few hours defeats the purpose: the concrete shrinks on its own, the crack follows a random path, and cutting no longer helps. That's why on large areas, cutting starts before pouring is even finished on the far sections.

Cutting depth must be at least a third of the slab thickness — only then does a weak cross-section form that lets the concrete crack in a controlled way. Joint spacing is tied to thickness and reinforcement type, typically 24–30 times the slab thickness, but the grid is always overlaid on the actual layout. A joint should run along column axes, not next to them, and should never form a T-intersection: stress concentrates at such a junction and the edge chips.

A cut joint is left open until the slab completes most of its shrinkage — usually 28 days or more. Only then is it widened, cleaned of dust, fitted with a backer rod, and filled with polyurethane or polysulfide sealant. Sealing it too early lets shrinkage tear the sealant apart, while leaving it unsealed lets it fill with dirt and start breaking down at the edges under equipment wheels.

A correctly calculated joint layout is what keeps a floor crack-free. We account for rack placement and forklift traffic paths: joints must never form T-intersections, and their spacing must not exceed 24 times the slab thickness.

Joints create controlled weak points in the concrete slab. This lets the cracks that inevitably form during shrinkage and temperature changes follow the joint line, instead of randomly tearing up the floor.

The optimal window is 6–12 hours after pouring in summer. The key rule: the concrete must be strong enough not to chip under the blade, but not yet cracking on its own. In winter, this window can extend to 24 hours.

The standard cutting depth is 1/3 of the slab thickness. For example, for a 200 mm floor, the joint depth would be about 60–70 mm. This creates the weak cross-section needed to guide the crack.

For industrial floors with racking equipment, high-hardness polyurethane sealants work best. They protect the joint edges from chipping under forklift wheels and keep out moisture and dirt.

Without joints, random shrinkage cracks will form in the slab. They widen under equipment loads, their edges start to chip, and the floor loses both load-bearing capacity and appearance.

Spacing between shrinkage joints shouldn't exceed 6 meters in any direction, with an optimal grid of 3×3 or 4×4 meters. Spacing also can't exceed 24 times the slab thickness.
